Mukherjee became the first Bengali to become the Presidentof India in 2012. Throughout his term, he received a high amount of popularity from many parties including his opposition for his impressive ability and leadership style. He managed to proclaim the Criminal law Ordinance in 2013 which allowed for improvement to the Indian Penal Code, Indian Evidence Act and Code of Criminal Procedure on laws relating to sexual offences.
