During his time at Number 10 Downing Street, Alastair played an instrumental part in 1997, 2001 and 2005 general elections. During his tenure, Alastair introduced a Strategic Communications Unit in Downing Street, revolutionising the way in which the Government co-ordinated their activity. He was also heavily involved in the People’s Vote Campaign and in the conduction of the Good Friday Agreements. After leaving politics behind, Alastair has authored a number of books about his experiences, including 'The Blair Years' which was recognised as a Sunday Times Number 1 Bestseller and 'But What Can I Do?' which will be released on the 11th of May 2023. He has also authored several books documenting his experiences of alcoholism and mental health, such as Living Better: How I Learned to Survive Depression.
He has also often supported the charity Bloodwise, acting as the Chairman of the charity raising money for those suffering from blood cancers. He has recently shown his support to causes supporting mental health, having experienced the hardships of mental health with his own depression and addictions along with his brothers battle with schizophrenia. Alastair is now an Ambassador for Time to Change and has co-founded the Equality4MentalHealth all-party campaign, which secured funding for mental health services.
