Sir Bradley Wiggins CBE is one of cycling’s most decorated and celebrated personalities. In 1998, Wiggins’ first Commonwealth Games, he won a silver medal in the men’s 4000m team pursuit. At the 2003 World Cycling Championships, Wiggins had his first taste of senior gold as he won the individual pursuit. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Wiggins won his first individual gold medal with victory at the individual pursuit by a staggering 4 seconds. He also won a bronze and silver medal which meant he was the first British athlete to win three or more medals at one Olympic Games for over 40 years. This fantastic achievement saw Wiggins appointed an OBE for his services to sport.
His Tour de France breakthrough came in 2009. After Lance Armstrong was disqualified for doping offences, Wiggins became the first British rider in history to finish on the podium of a Tour de France, coming third. Following his success, Wiggins moved to Team Sky in 2010 with his main of victory in the Tour de France. By 2012 Wiggins had already achieved what he set out to do as Wiggins was crowned Tour de France champion. In the process became the first man person in history to win the Paris-Nice, Tour de Romandie, Critérium du Dauphiné, and the Tour de France in a single season.
In the same year, Wiggins competed in the 2012 Olympics on home soil. When he won the time trial he became the most decorated British Olympian in history amassing an astonishing seven medals. He broke a Guinness World Record as he became the only person ever to win a Tour de France and Olympic gold medal in the same year. In 2016, Wiggins won his fifth Olympic gold medal after winning the team pursuit.
