After receiving a degree in history from the University College, London, Michael joined the Reading Evening Post as a reporter in 1966 where he kickstarted his career in journalism. In 1970, he enjoyed a brief period with London’s Evening Standard before moving to The Guardian in 1971.
Throughout his 45 years with The Guardian, White played a variety of roles for the nations leading newspaper. He initially wrote as a feature writer for three years before becoming a diary writer, political correspondent, parliamentary sketchwriter and Washington Correspondent. By 1990, he had taken over from Ian Aitken and secured the title of political editor.
As well as covering fast-paced political events such as Margaret Thatcher’s 1979 election triumph, Michael has also made TVappearances on a range of programmes. White has also presented a one-off show for BBC Radio 4 entitled Savaged By A Dead Sheep, where he reflected on the best parliamentary insults that have been aired in the House of Commons.
Michael continues to work in the journalism career today as he regularly writes for the Health Service Journal as a columnist. After a total of 16 years as a political editor, White has amassed an extensive knowledge of international political affairs.
