Journalist and acclaimed author, Michela Wrong, is an expert on African affairs having worked as a foreign correspondent on the continent for global broadcasters. Having reported for Reuters, the BBC and Al Jazeera, Michael has established a reputation as a reliable journalist, able to cover challenging topics in under challenging circumstances. Her experiences in Africa have led to the publication of award-winning books, articles, and a demand for Michela as a speaker. As a journalist, Michela has reported live from locations around the world, from her early career in Italy and France to her later work in Kenya as an Africa specialist, Michela has consistently delivered factual, sensitive and informed news. Most prominently representing Reuters and the BBC, Michela has been at the forefront of reporting on the Rwanda Genocide, the transition of leadership in Zaire and numerous other pivotal events in Africa over the past two decades. In recognition to her contributions as a journalist, Michela was awarded the James Cameron Prize for moral vision and professional integrity in 2010.
Since 2000, Michela has published four books, including her debut novel published in 2015 which is in the works for a film version. Each of her non-fiction works are highly acclaimed, and have become essential guides for journalists, diplomats and aid workers in the field. Her first, ‘In the Footsteps of Kurtz’ received the PEN prize for non-fiction, with her later book ‘It’s Our Turn to Eat’ which told the true story of a Kenyan whistle-blower, being named on the Economist’s Best Books of 2009 and on the Orwell shortlist. Currently, Michela continues to write for leading publications including the Observer, Financial Times, and New York Times to name a few.
Committed to her work in Africa, Michela acts as a consultant to the Miles Morland Foundation which supports writers on the continent and services arts events. Furthermore, she is involved as an advisor to the Centre for Global Development, a non profit aiming to reduce poverty and inequality internationally. An experienced event speaker, Michael has presented a TED talk, corporate discussions and conference presentations ensuring she is well equipped for any occasion.
