Former England player and manager, Terry Venables enjoys a stellar reputation in the world of football. Remembered in the game for his spell at Chelsea as a player, as well as his time as manager of Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and England between 1984 and 1996, he was a famously astute tactician with an eye for detail. After Venables had created the “Team of the Eighties” as dubbed by the media at Crystal Palace, composed of youth team players and free transfers and taken them from the Third Division to 13th place in the First Division inside four years at the club, he moved across to QPR.
There he experienced similar success, taking the club from the Second Division to the First in 1983, as well as taking them to the FA Cup Final while in the Second Division in 1982. Amazingly, Venables finished fifth in the top division in his next season, before the big guns came calling, in the form of Barcelona. At Barcelona, he would lead the club to their first Spanish league title in a decade in 1985, as well as the Copa Del Rey and European Cup finals in 1986, both of which were eventually lost, but did feature a memorable comeback against IFK Goteborg in the latter, as they overturned a 3-0 deficit to reach the final.
Signings of Gary Lineker and Mark Hughes followed, with the former proving a major success at the Camp Nou. Nevertheless, Venables’ time was up at the club and he then took over the top job at Tottenham Hotspur. He would take the club to third in 1990 before winning the FA Cup in 1991, while building an exciting English core featuring Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker who followed him from Catalonia. England came calling in 1994, and his time there, without being particularly successful, introduced them to a new, exciting tactical style of play. Current England manager, Gareth Southgate who played under Venables at Euro 96 later said, “Terry opened my eyes to things that no one else has. He has fantastic tactical awareness. Every senior player in the group went away having learned a lot from him, which is an achievement.”
A player’s man who possessed both tactical nous and skills in man management, Terry Venables is able to recount his experiences at the highest level of football with wisdom, hindsight and hilarious anecdotes, in what is one of the most compelling after dinner speeches from a football speaker available in the UK. Talking peak performance, overcoming adversity, maximising success and footballing philosophy as well as useful transferable insight into leadership and teamwork – he is a must-have speaker to entertain your team.
