Former professional footballer, and pundit Robbie Savage a talented player best known for his time at Leicester City and Derby County. Having represented top clubs and Wales’ national team, Savage is now an after dinner speaker, who speaks fondly and frankly of his time as a professional sportsman.
Traning as a striker for Manchester United youth team, Savage competed in the FA Youth Cup, winning the title in 1992, before transferring as a promising player to Leicester City in 1997. Switching to midfield, the change suited Savage, who with his team, reached the final of the League Cup on two occasions, winning it on one. After a short time at Birmingham City, where he was awarded the club’s Player of the Year in 2003, he moved to Blackburn Rovers. Whilst at Blackburn, Savage made 76 appearances and persevered playing despite the setback of a knee injury.
At the height of his career, Savage played as first choice midfielder for Derby County, where he proved himself as a skilled player as well as a fan favourite. Playing for the club from 2008 until 2011, Savage had the pleasure of captaining the team from his arrival, where he showed great leadership. Throughout the 2011-2012 season, he played in fifty of the teams 51 matches, and his efforts were rewarded with the club’s Player of the Year award.
As a highly regarded midfield, Savage was selected to represent his country’s senior team in 1995, having previously played for the youth teams. Obtaining 39 caps for his country, was a career highlight for Savage, who proved popular with the nation’s fans. Although he was a strong player, Savage retired from international football in 2005, to focus on his club career and due to a clash with the manager.
Since his retirement in 2001, Savage has focused on his media and keynote speaking career. Working in a variety of punditry roles, from covering the 2010 FIFA World Cup, to presenting on BBC Radio 5’s 6-0-6 show, Savage has not held back on his honest opinions of players, the game and the sideline representatives. In 2010, Savaged signed a deal with William Hill as a sporting ambassador and was consequently awarded the Sony Radio Academy Rising Star trophy. Although he continues to commentate on BT Sport, Savage has recently stepped out of retirement to join Stockport Town.
