Chris Sutton is a former professional footballer who played at the highest level throughout his career, he is now often seen as a pundit and commentator, most commonly for BT Sport working on their coverage of the Scottish leagues. Sutton played as a striker during his career and scored 148 goals in 409 domestic games, these goals came at a variety of different English and Scottish sides. Sutton’s career started out at Norwich City and he made his debut against Queens Park Rangers in 1991. Sutton played during the first-ever season of the FA Premier League and helped guide the club to third place at the end of the season, Sutton scored 8 goals which made him the second-highest scorer for the club.
The season after, Sutton enjoyed a high scoring season as he ended the Premier League campaign with 25 goals, this lead to him signing for Blackburn Rovers to become the most expensive player in English football with a £5 million transfer. His first season at Blackburn was a huge success, he partnered Alan Shearer upfront and scored 15 goals to help Blackburn win their first league title since 1914. Although enduring a bad injury setback, Sutton was back scoring goals in the Premier League goals in no time and was the joint highest scorer in the 1997-98 season. Sutton joined Chelsea for £10 million in 1999 but only stayed there until 2000 after struggling to adapt to Chelsea’s style of play, this saw him move to Scottish giants Celtic for £6 million. The majority of Sutton’s last playing years were at Celtic where he built an outstanding partnership with Swedish legend, Henrik Larsson.
Sutton won the SPFA Player of the Year in 2003-04 season and enjoyed lots of success throughout his time there. He helped Celtic win three domestic league titles, three Scottish Cups and one Scottish League Cup. Sutton would go on to play for Birmingham City and Aston Villa in short stints between 2006-07 before deciding to retire from the game. Now as a regular commentator and pundit, Sutton has gained many vital skills to become a successful after dinner speaker. Sutton often discusses his successful footballing career but delves into many important topics such as drive and determination, maximising success and peak performance. When coupled with his presenting skills, Sutton provides invigorating speeches and is the ideal sports speaker for any type of event.
