Alan Shearer is a former footballer who is famed for his goal-scoring ability that saw him become the record goalscorer in the Premier League with 260 goals. After an injury-hit first year at Ewood Park Alan scored 31 times in 40 games during the 1993-94 season, which was enough for him to be named FWA Footballer of the Year. The following year he won the Golden Boot with 34 goals and won the Premier League. His performances in the 1994/95 season saw him named PFA Players’ Player of the Year. He finished top scorer in the Premier League the following year before he moved to Newcastle for a World record fee. A boyhood Newcastle fan he was an instant fan favourite and finished as top scorer in the Premier League for a third consecutive season and added another player of the Year award to his collection. Alan would go onto captain the side and in the 2005-06 season, he became Newcastle’s all-time scorer ending his career with 206 goals in 395 appearances for the club. He was capped 60 times and scored 30 goals for England .
After ending his playing career, he became a regular pundit on BBC’s Match of the Day and worked on the BBC’s coverage of World Cups and European Championships. He returned to Newcastle as manager in the 2008/09 season but left after eight games after failing to preserve their Premier League status. He has also carried out charity work and is a patron of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and an ambassador for the NSPCC. Alan was awarded a CBE and is the Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland. He also received an honorary Doctorate in Law from Northumbria and Newcastle Universities.
