South African golf speaker and professional player George Coetzee made his amateur debut at a young age, impressing both supporters and professionals by winning his first ever competitive game. Now a much respected and successful pro George Coetzee also works as sports speaker on the global after dinner speaker circuit.
Becoming professional in 2007 Coetzee had spent the previous few years competing in the Callaway Junior World Championship where he placed 4th and 8th and attending the University of San Diego for a single semester before turning his attention solely to his golf career. Coetzee is now a well known name on not only the European Tour but a number of other high profile golf speaker tournaments around the world including The Sunshine Tour.
Though his ascent onto The European Tour may have had it’s problems – Coetzee qualified via qualifying school in 2010 only to be forced to return to school the following season after placing 126th in the Order of Merit – he has significantly improved his performances in more recent years. Regaining his playing rights in 2011 Coetzee went on to achieve a runner-up place in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, losing out to esteemed golf speaker and player Thomas Bjorn. Coetzee finished the 2011 season a full 100 places above his previous ranking, at number 26 on the newly instated Race to Dubai ranking.
George Coetzee’s success continued over the following years when he went on to place 21st in the Race to Dubai as well as making it into the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking, placing him alongside a number of impressive golfers and sports speakers including Ricky Fowler and Justin Rose. In February 2014, Coetzee won his maiden European Tour title at the Joburg Open, he continues to work as an after dinner speaker and is available for corporate and charity golf days.
