Denis Law CBE

Denis Law CBE is a retired Scottish football centre forward who is regarded as one of Manchester United’s greatest ever centre forwards. Law played 486 games for domestic clubs scoring an astonishing 227 goals, he also scored 30 goals in 55 appearances for the Scotland national side. Law is the only Scottish player ever to win the Ballon d’Or award after winning it in 1964.

Starting his career at Huddersfield Town in 1956, Law Scored 16 times in 81 appearances, a fantastic start to his career at such a young age. Law was signed by Manchester City in 1960 for a British record fee of £55,000. One of his most memorable memories at the club was scoring 6 goals in a cup match against Luton only for the game to be abandoned with around 20 minutes to go. Law was hungry for success so he signed for Italian giants Torino in 1961 for a British record transfer fee of £110,000, he played 27 games with the club, scoring 10 goals.

After a season at Torino, Law was signed for Manchester United, little did he or the fans know, a legend was soon to rise. In 1964-65 Law had one of the best seasons of his life, he scored 28 league goals and ended the season as top scorer, this was influential in Manchester United winning the First Division and also in him winning the Ballon d’Or award. Playing a huge part in Matt Busby’s famous United squads, Law continued to score goals for fun and eventually scored a monumental 171 goals in 309 games for United. As a player, he is one of the most successful players of all time and had 11 glory years at Manchester United.

Eventually, Law returned to Manchester City and would play there until he retired in 1974, he played a further 24 games for the club and scored 9 goals. Law enjoyed a very successful international career, he represented Scotland in the FIFA World Cup and the Euros and is Scotland’s joint highest goalscorer ever. Law eventually retired from all forms of professional football in 1974 and retired as one of the most recognisable faces in football.
