Alan Minter

British Boxing Legend

A popular British boxer, best known as ‘Boom Boom Minter, Alan Minter won 39 of his 49 professional fights, winning British, European and World titles to establish himself as one of the finest boxers Britain has ever seen.

His record in boxing was impressive. He won bronze in the Munich Olympic Games in 1972, a year after being crowned the Amateur Boxing Association of England Middleweight Champion in 1971. This prompted him to turn pro in 1972, setting up his debut scrap against Maurice Thomas at the Royal Albert Hall.

After beating Thomas by technical knockout, Minter put together an impressive string of performances, winning his first 11 fights as a professional. The tail end of 1973 and going into 1974 wasn’t quite as successful for Minter, as he would win half of his next 8 fights, including two losses against fellow Brit Jan Magdziarz.

He would quickly put paid to his indifferent form, making up for lost time between 1975 and 1980 – as he won 23 of his 28 remaining career fights. This would see him begin to collect a number of middleweight titles and earn a ranking inside the top ten middleweight challengers.

First it was the 1975 British middleweight title which he prized out of his fight against counterpart, Kevin Finnegan. Seven fights on, Minter would defeat Italian Germano Valsecchi on his opponent’s home turf to win the European Middleweight Title.

Sadly, his 1978 fight against Angelo Jacopucci proved devastating, as Minter’s knockout blow which won him back the vacant European middleweight title, also proved fatal to his opponent, making it a hugely difficult time for him.

Minter still managed to have significant success on the grandest stages of them all, and would compete at Wembley Arena and Caesars Palace in the years that followed. Back-to-back wins against another italian in Vito Antuofermo would see Minter become world champion.

An entertaining boxing speaker with anecdotes and stories aplenty, Minter offers insight into peak performance, determination and overcoming adversity which can be truly beneficial to teams. He can also entertain as an after dinner speaker, proving himself a top-class act capable of inspiring all manner of audiences.
