Former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Lennox Lewis was a formidable character in the ring. Competing against some of boxing’s greats, including Mike Tyson, Lewis made a name for himself as one of Britain’s finest boxers. Now a renowned boxing speaker, Lewis’ approachable and engaging delivery of speeches makes him a favourite on the after dinner speaker circuit.
Regarded as one of the greatest boxing heavyweights of all time, Lewis began his amateur career in Canada, winning the gold at the Junior World Championships and competing for the country in the 1984 Olympic Games. Again representing Canada after winning the Commonwealth Games title in 1986, Lewis achieved his amateur goal of winning gold at an Olympic Games, this time in the 1988 Seoul games.
Turning professional in 1989; Lennox Lewis returned to the UK and consecutively won his first 21 fights, before knocking out Donovan Ruddock in 1992 to take the No. 1 ranking in WBC rankings. Lewis became WBC Heavyweight Champion later that year after Riddick Bowe was stripped of the title, he was the first Briton to hold the title in the 20th century. An almost unrivaled 84-inch reach made him a formidable competitor and he is ranked to this day as BoxRec’s best ever pound-for-pound British boxer.
Time came in 2014 for Lewis to hang up his gloves, after knocking out Mike Tyson and beating Vitali Klitschko, finishing his career with an outstanding 41 wins (32 KOs), 2 losses and 1 draw. Lewis is only one of three heavyweights to have retired with no unavenged defeats. Since retirement, he has gone on to become a boxing analyst and brand ambassador for a number of influential corporations including HBO’s Boxing After Dark.
