Sir Ranulph Fiennes has been described by the Guinness Book of Records as the ‘world’s greatest living explorer’ and, given his incredible history of solo and group expeditions, few would argue with the title. Having successfully led numerous teams through the planet’s most inhospitable and least–known environments, there is nobody better versed in the qualities of effective leadership than the former SAS man, who became the British Army’s youngest ever captain back in the 1960s.
It is now over 45 years since he first led the British Expedition of the White Nile and established himself as one of the world’s most prominent explorers and since then he has broken several records, including becoming the first to trek around Earth’s polar axis at surface level and completing the first unsupported journey across Antarctica in history.
In recent years he has turned his attention in part to extreme marathon running. In 2003 he completed seven marathons in seven days on seven continents and the 71 year old has just announced that he will take part in the toughest footrace on the Earth, the Marathon des Sables. Should he finish the race he will have run 156 miles across the Sahara desert in just six days, and in blistering conditions, and will become the oldest Briton to complete this Herculean task. He hopes to raise £2.5 million for cancer charity, Marie Curie in the process.
Equally, Sir Ranulph has built a fantastic reputation has an after dinner speaker over the years, giving key insights on motivation, leadership and survival to businesses, schools and individuals. He communicates his ideas in a clear and cogent fashion, drawing analogies between his own experiences and the qualities required to enjoy successful leadership in business.
Focusing on the ideas of enthusiasm, teamwork and patience, his audiences come away with great ideas they can apply to the challenges of their own lives. He is a consummate event host and has a wonderful sense of humour and a very approachable nature, making him the perfect addition to any corporate event.
