Laura Bassett is an iconic footballer and football speaker. Having won 60 international caps and appeared for eight top clubs in England and abroad – she has enjoyed significant success in her career. Playing for Canberra United in the Australian W-League since 2017, Bassett is in the midst of her second spell away from the top league in England. Before her move, she had established herself as one of the FA Women’s Super League‘s most important players.
A defender by trade, Bassett has played a pivotal role in several Cup-winning squads. Playing for and captaining some of the most successful sides in England – Bassett quickly endeared herself to football fans everywhere. In 2012 she was appointed as one of eight digital media ambassadors, from the leagues biggest teams. This saw her wear her Twitter tag on her shirt sleeve in hope of raising the profile of the WSL.
She made her debut in the WSL as a school girl, for Coventry City Ladies. Her subsequent performances earned her a move to Birmingham City Ladies, where she played between 2000-2008, except for a short loan spell with New York Magic in 2006. Next, she moved to Arsenal Ladies, becoming part of the FA Cup and Premier League double-winning team in 2009. She then joined Leeds United Ladies, helping them to win the Premier League Cup in 2010 before returning to Birmingham City.
Her second spell at Birmingham City saw her win the FA Cup in 2012, as well as finish runners-up in the WSL and Continental Cup. She then helped Chelsea Ladies to a second-place finish and made 29 appearances for Notts County before joining Canberra United. Throughout her club career, she was promoted from the England youth teams to become a full international in 2003. This was to be the beginning of a fantastic career with England, in which she was part of the Lionesses’ team which won a bronze medal in the 2015 Football World Cup and a silver medal at the 2009 and 2017 European Championships. The latter tournament saw her take the captain’s armband for her country.
