Television and radio presenter, published author and mental health advocate, Katie Thistleton is best known for her presenting role on BBC Radio 1 with Cel Spellman and her multiple appearances across the CBBC network. As an ambassador for some of the UK’s largest mental health charities, Katie is the perfect after-dinner speaker for educating and eradicating the stigma around mental disorders. Having grown up in Manchester, Thistleton attended the University of Salford where she achieved a degree in English and Creative Writing. With the aim of entering the media career, she began studying at News Associates and qualified as an NCTJ certified journalist. She began working behind the scenes at CBeebies as a researcher and PA before her entering the spotlight as a presenter at CBBC HQ. She presented what’s known as ‘the bits in between the shows’ as well as hosting the CBBC Book Club and making appearances on Blue Peter, Sam & Mark’s Big Friday Wind-Up and Jedward’s Big Adventure.
Outside of children’s television, Katie has also appeared on the highly prominent Celebrity Eggheads, Celebrity Mastermind and Children In Need. As a keen bookworm, she continues to discuss literature as the event’s host for publishing houses Penguin, Hachette and HarperCollins and often attends literacy festivals. She is also often called upon to judge book events including the BBC National Short Story Awards, The Blue Peter Book Awards and The Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize.
Her calm presenting style earnt her the opportunity to become the host of BBC Radio 1’s The Surgery in 2017, which led to her role of co-presenter of Life Hacks and Radio 1’s Most Played show along with Cel Spellman. Having established herself as a regular on the UK’s most popular radio station, Thistleton has proven herself as an entertaining, conversation-starting icon with an evergrowing fan base.
In 2018, Katie released her own book. Dear Katie: Real Problems, Real Advice founded her reputation as the nations agony aunt as she addresses mental health issues, offers tips and tricks surrounding self-confidence and highlights issues at schools, in relationships and friendships for teenagers. As the ambassador for Young Minds and Place2Be, Katie Thistleton has proven her passion for spreading mental health awareness. She is able to speak about her own mental health issues as well as ways of overcoming them throughout her after-dinner speeches as well as offering interesting conversations surrounding literature and the media world.
