Tariq Fancy was BlackRock’s first-ever Chief Investment Officer of Sustainable Investing. His role entailed integrating ESG considerations and data into the organisation’s global investment processes. On a mission to fix capitalism, Tariq has been working to solve capitalism’s biggest issue – bridging the gap between profit and purpose. As Founder of The Rumie Initiative, Tariq is making learning as easy, accessible and interactive as social media. Now available to hire as a keynote speaker, Tariq expands on his mission, vision and illustrious career in building and managing investment teams and strategies.
Tariq possesses a bachelor's degree from Brown University, a Masters in Economics & Public Policy from Sciences Po and an MBA from INSEAD. After completing an internship for Merrill Lynch, Tariq joined Credit Suisse First Boston as an Investment Banking Analyst. In the matter of a few years, Tariq became the MHR Fund Management’s youngest Partner. Tariq has also been a Board Member & Chief Restructuring Officer for Wildfire before joining BlackRock. In 2021, Tariq launched a viral essay series called “The Secret Diary of a ‘Sustainable Investor’”. This essay series was preceded by a slew of op-eds that challenged the ESG status quo. The essay series garnered a lot of acclaim including being referred to as ‘riveting’ by The Economist.
An unfortunate situation in Tariq’s life affirmed to him that life was too short to do the things that mattered to him. Keen on making a difference, Tariq decided to bite the bullet and found The Rumie Initiative. A product of the Y-Combinator and winner of Google’s National Impact Challenge, Rumie has been at the forefront of the microlearning concept and is a globally recognised platform used in over 200 countries. From replacing social media usage time amongst young people in North America, to being the platform Afghan girls feel safe using to learn, The Rumie Initiative is a true emblem of Tariq’s purpose.
Vocal about opposing ESG industry practices that can be classified as greenwashing, Tariq is a distinguished figure in the field. He has recently launched a video podcast series called “MisterFancySpeaks” on TikTok where he decodes successful investing strategies through 60 second videos. Tariq Fancy is also available to speak at a wide range of events about investing, business, ESG, and fixing capitalism. His TEDx talk "I've Seen the Worst of Capitalism - Here's How We Fix It" is the perfect insight into Tariq's mission. A fresh voice, with a unique perspective, Tariq knows what it takes to build a truly sustainable organisation. Hire Tariq Fancy and ensure your audience leaves with a strong understanding of how to prepare for ESG 2.0’.
