Alistair Bunkall is the Defence Correspondent for Sky News. He is well known for his reports on war conflicts and international terror attacks, and he is currently one of the UK’s leading broadcasters on world affairs, security and diplomacy. After his start in sports broadcasting for ITV, he went on to reporting current affairs for ITV Central, Thames Valley and Meridian. Thanks to his coverage of the UK flooding in 2007, Alistair was awarded the Royal Television Society Award.
In 2008, Alistair started working for Sky News and during the Eurozone crisis, in 2010 to 2011, he became Sky News' Business Correspondent, reviewing the political debate taking place around Europe. In 2012 he became the channel’s Defence Correspondent.
Reporting from Afghanistan, Alistair was the last journalist patrolling with the British army and covered the moment when the Union flag was lowered over Camp Bastion at the end of the conflict. Alistair has also covered influential world events, including the fight against the Islamic State, South Sudan’s civil war, the Mediterranean migrant crisis and various natural disasters, such as Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
He is also well known for his hard-hitting reports on terrorist attacks, such as the 7/7 bombings, the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby, Anders Breivik mass murder in Norway and the Charlie Hebdo shootings in Paris in January 2015.
In 2014, Alistair became the first journalist to interview, in English, a senior North Korean official, drawing responses from both the British Foreign Office and the US State Department. He reported from Malaysia after the unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. Alistair contributes regularly to Monocle Magazine and writes articles for titles such as Spectator, Evening Standard, The Telegraph and New Statesman. He has also reviewed newspapers for LBC Radio in London.
Alistair founded and curates the daily popular Twitter account @SkyNewsWW1 covering the Great War, as events took place day by day,100 years ago.
