Angela Rippon, a household name in the world of journalism and presenting, is a popular after-dinner speaker. Amongst other notable achievements, she has featured on major BBC and Channel 4 shows, including Top Gear, The One Show and Nine O’Clock News. Taking to the broadcasting scene in 1966, she has been a regular face on mainstream television. As an after-dinner speaker, Angela is a popular choice thanks to her charisma and confidence while on stage.
Born in Devon, Angela left school to join Western Morning News in their photographic office. She also worked for the Sunday Independent, Westward Television and BBC local radio, in her early career. In 1966, at the age of 21, Angela took to the screen. Presenting for BBC South West, she started as a reporter for the news segment, before presenting the national news in 1974. After proving her worth, Angela was offered the prestigious position presenting on the BBC’s Nine O’Clock News.
Other notable television appearances include the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show in 1976, two series of Top Gear and Come Dancing. As well as presenting, Angela also cofounded the broadcast television company TV-am. Angela is also a well-loved radio presenter, having featured daily on LBC Newstalk from 1990 to 1994, and The Big Breakfast with Channel 4.
Most recently, Angela co-presented the live streaming of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding in 2018, hosting for Channel Seven. Angela is also a respected published author, having released children’s books with Purnell and Sons and Mark Phillips: The Man and His Horses in 1982.
As a testament to her commitment to journalism, broadcasting and presenting, Angela has received a number of high profile awards. In 2004, at the Queen’s Birthday Honours, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Angela was later titled Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) at the 2017 New Year Honours.
