During her long and successful career, Denise Lewis was a sensational heptathlete and one of the most recognisable faces in British athletics. She has had an extraordinary athletics career and also post-athletics, which has seen here awarded an OBE, following her MBE a few years prior.
After retiring from athletics, Lewis has dedicated her career to working within the media, regularly appearing as a pundit on the BBC. She was an integral part of the commentary team for the coverage of the 2012 London Olympics Games and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Now a successful and popular after-dinner speaker, Denise shares her insight and experience talking on topics including drive and determination, and peak performance.
Lewis’ started her athletics career in the early 1990s as an extremely talented heptathlete. She worked tirelessly to break into the Commonwealth Games squad in 1994 and produced an outstanding performance to win an unforgettable gold medal.
At the Olympic Games, Lewis won her first medal with bronze in the heptathlon at Atlanta in 1996, and she went on to win a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Lewis won gold with the slimmest of margins, winning by just 53 points with the title going down to the final event. In the 800 metres, she ran with a bandaged calf after suffering an injury, but Lewis battled through and won, showing fantastic drive and determination.
She continued her success winning heptathlon gold at both the 1994 and 1998 Commonwealth Games, an event she dominated for years. She also won gold medals at the European Cup, European Athletics Championships and won two silver medals at the World Athletics Championships. After an extremely successful career, Denise Lewis OBE retired from athletics in 2005.
Since retiring, Lewis has become a regular pundit for the BBC and has been seen at various other media events. She has been part of the BBC’s coverage for a number of major events, such as the Olympics Games, Commonwealth Games and the World Athletics Championships. As well as punditry, Lewis also took part in Strictly Come Dancing, performing excellently throughout and eventually becoming runner-up with her partner Ian Waite. Lewis has also appeared on TV shows such as The Chase, Family Fortunes and Pointless.
