Professor Dame Wendy Hall

Professor Dame Wendy Hall has enjoyed a distinguished career at the forefront of research into web science, artificial intelligence and data science. Currently working as the Regius Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton, Wendy is renowned for being one of the very first computer scientists to research multimedia and hypermedia. Having had a significant impact in her industry and shattered glass ceilings as a woman in STEM, Wendy is now hired as a world-class keynote speaker. In the mid-1980s, Wendy marked her prominence in the world of computer science and technology when she worked as a member of the research team that developed the Microcosm Hypermedia System, a forerunner of the infamous World Wide Web. Since then, Wendy has been a preeminent expert on multimedia and hypermedia, along with forging a highly successful career in academia – working as a prominent leader of science and engineering education at the University of Southampton. In addition to her success in academia, Wendy is also widely known for being the Co-Founder of the Web Science Research Initiative, the Co-Chair of the UK Government’s Artificial Intelligence Review and the Managing Director of the Web Science Trust.

An important role model for women in STEM, Wendy has also formerly worked as the Senior Vice President of the Academy of Engineering and a Member of the UK Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology. Additionally, she has committed time to being a founding Member of the European Research Council, a Member of the Global Commission on Internet Governance, Chair of the European Commission’s ISTAG, the President of the ACM and BCS, a Member of the UK Government’s AI Council and a Member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Futures Council focused on Digital Economy. Appointed Dame Commander in the 2009 New Year Honours List, Wendy has well and truly marked her name in the history books of computer science, technology, engineering and science, having also been appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Most recently, Wendy has become the Chair of the Ada Lovelace Institute and was appointed to the BT Technology Advisory Board. Having also been the recipient of the Suffrage Science Award, the Duncan Davies Medal and the Anita Borg Award for Technical Leadership, Wendy was made a Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society in 2016.
