Sophie Raworth is one of the BBC’s most senior newsreaders and broadcasters, best known for anchoring the News at Six and News at Ten. Working with the BBC for over thirty years, Sophie has been called upon to present Britain’s most important events, including the Queen's Golden Jubilee and the Coronation of King Charles. With her poised delivery and years of experience, Sophie is the ideal host for corporate events, award presentations and formal dinners.
After studying a joint honours degree in French and German at the University of Manchester, Sophie completed a postgraduate diploma in Broadcast Journalism at the University of London. In 1992, she became a trainee at the BBC, working as a news reporter for Greater Manchester Radio. With a clear talent for broadcasting, Sophie soon became a BBC Regions Correspondent in Brussels. Returning to the UK in 1995, Sophie was a joint presenter for the BBC Look North programme in Leeds. The coming years would see Sophie specialise as a newsreader, co-presenting BBC Breakfast with Jeremy Bowen, Justin Webb and John Nicolson in 2000 and anchoring the BBC News at Six in 2003. Beyond news reporting, Sophie is an accomplished event host, having led award ceremonies and industry gatherings, including the prestigious Press Awards for the Society of Editors in 2011. Expanding her broadcasting skills further, Sophie took over as the host of Watchdog in 2015 and Crimewatch in 2016. Still serving as a main reader for the News at Six and Ten, Sophie occasionally features as a host for other BBC programmes, including the 2022 Chelsea Flower Show and the 2024 Election Results. She also starred in the BBC ancestry programme, ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ in 2017.
For her dedicated broadcasting career, Sophie was awarded a Doctor of Arts honoris causa by City University London in 2013. Sophie’s latest accomplishment is her upcoming book, titled ‘Running on Air’. An autobiographical reflection of her life, the book focuses on Sophie’s career as a broadcaster and her passion for marathon running. Having completed all six of the World Marathon Majors by 2017, she achieved her seventh star at the TCS Sydney Marathon in 2025. As part of her marathon runs, Sophie has raised money for an array of charities, including Cancer Research. She is also a patron for the First Touch charity, helping fund equipment and staff training.
