Kamal Ahmed is the Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief at The News Movement – an initiative that aims to provide people, particularly Gen-Z with information they trust on platforms that they frequently use. Believing in the supreme power of storytelling, Kamal hopes to inspire and engage his audiences, thus driving change and progress, through his journalism.
Educated at the University of Leeds, Kamal stepped into the world of journalism as a Reporter for Scotland on Sunday. He then became the Royal Correspondent for The Guardian, later assuming responsibility as the Media Editor for The Guardian. In the year 2000, Kamal joined as the Political Editor at The Observer, then becoming the Executive Editor of News at The Observer.
Kamal has had the experience of working at numerous prominent newspapers in the UK including being the Business Editor for Sunday Telegraph, before he joined the BBC. Starting as the Business Editor, Kamal served as the Economics Director and finally Editorial Director at the BBC – a role of great prominence. In 2021 he was named as one of the UK’s Most Influential People of African or African Caribbean Heritage in the Powerlist. With decades worth of editorship experience in his arsenal, he is the President of the Society of Editors.
Besides his current role at The News Movement, Kamal also serves as one of the Board Members at the Media Trust. He is also a Fellow at the Royal Society of Arts and Governor of the NIESR. A prolific speaker he was invited to share his views at WAN-IFRA - the World Association of News Publishers congress.
