Dr Sian Massey-Ellis MBE is a Premier League Assistant Referee and FIFA International Assistant Referee. As a pioneering figure in football, she has officiated in some of the most high-profile games. With over fifteen years' experience in a high-performance environment, she delivers engaging talks on decision-making under pressure, building resilience, effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and sustaining high standards of performance and accountability. Ideal for a range of events, Sian was recently invited to the House of Commons to represent female officials and share insights on increasing female participation in sports.
After graduating with a first-class degree in Sports Science from Birmingham Newman University in 2004, Sian completed her PGCE in Secondary PE. From there she became a Physical Education teacher and School Sports Coordinator at Foxford School, developing key skills in leadership, communication and decision-making. Sian later became a Premier League Assistant Referee and FIFA International Assistant Referee. As a trailblazing female official, she was the first Englishwoman to officiate in a men's UEFA club competition fixture in the Europa League and was the first female to officiate at the FA Community Shield.
Alongside officiating, Sian is a member of the PGMOL Inclusion and Diversity Advisory Committee, where she champions equality and cultivates high-performance cultures. She has also presented evidence to the Parliamentary Women and Equalities Committee, helping to shape inclusion strategies aimed at increasing representation in football officiating. With a passion for driving positive change, Sian supports organisations in developing inclusive, high-performing cultures and offers strategic insight, governance expertise and leadership guidance.
