Reverend Richard Coles is a multifaceted individual known for his roles as a cleric, broadcaster, writer, and former musician. Renowned for his engaging and insightful personality speaking style, he is arguably most noted for his unique journey from pop stardom to becoming one of Britain’s most beloved vicars.
Richard’s early life was founded on a mixture of religion and music - as a choirboy in his hometown of Northampton. In his teens, Richard moved to London and quickly joined Bronski Beat as a saxophonist in 1983. His time with Bronski Beat was marked by the band's energetic performances and socially conscious lyrics. In 1985, he formed The Communards with Jimmy Somerville, achieving significant success, with their cover of ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’. This song remains an iconic anthem of the era, emblematic of the band’s blend of pop and political commentary. After the band split in 1988, Richard experienced a profound personal transformation. Struggling with the loss of friends from the HIV epidemic, personal turmoil and post-pop success, Richard began to explore his spiritual side more deeply.
Richard pursued theological studies at King’s College London, where he developed a deeper understanding of faith and spirituality. His academic journey continued at the College of the Resurrection in Yorkshire, where he immersed himself in religious studies and pastoral training. His dedication culminated in his ordination in 2005. Equally, as a broadcaster, he has been a prominent figure, co-presenting BBC Radio 4's ‘Saturday Live’ for over a decade. Richard has authored several best-selling books - His memoir, ‘Fathomless Riches’ offers a candid look at his journey from pop star to priest. He has appeared on several popular shows, including ‘Have I Got News for You’, ‘QI’, and ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. His ‘Canon Clement’ mystery series showcases his talent for storytelling and his keen insight into human nature.
Reverend Richard Coles stands out not just for his multifaceted career but for his genuine warmth and humanity. Whether through his music, his ministry, or his media appearances, he has consistently demonstrated a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His journey from pop stardom to the priesthood is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the enduring importance of community. He discusses a wide range of topics, including faith, music, mental health, and the importance of community, making his speeches both relatable and inspiring.
