Paul Johnson is a British civil servant, Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies and visiting professor at University College London. As a member of the Committee on Climate Change also, Paul is a versatile after dinner speaker who can cover a variety of topics to audiences across the UK. After graduating with a degree in politics, philosophy and economics and an MSc in economics, Paul joined the Institute of Fiscal Studies where he stayed for ten years. He made his way up to become the Deputy Director before leaving to become an advisor on pensions and welfare reform in the Cabinet Office.
Early 1999 saw a brief period where Johnson was the head of Economies of Financial Regulation at the Financial Services Authority before he transferred to work as the Chief Economist and Director of Analytical Services for the Department of Education and Employment. Further roles in which Johnson has filled during his career include Director of Public Services and Chief Micro-Economist for HM Treasury and deputy head of the Government Economic Service.
Most recently, Paul has rejoined the Institute for Fiscal Studies as a research fellow before being named the Director in 2011. He became a member of the Economic and Social Research Council in 2002, a position in which he held for five years, before becoming a Senior Associate of Frontier Economics Ltd. As a frequent lecturer in the economics department of University College London, Paul is no stranger to giving insightful and educational speeches to his audiences.
