Nathalie McGloin MBE is best known as a unique pioneer in motorsport. Nathalie is best known as a unique pioneer in motorsport. She was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2018 for her services to motorsport and disability awareness. Nathalie is the first female driver with a spinal cord injury to be granted both a race and a rally license in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, she is the only female tetraplegic in the world to hold a race license, an achievement officially recognised by a Guinness World Record.
Having broken her neck in a car crash at age 16, resulting in complete paralysis from the chest down, Nathalie competes against able-bodied men in her championship. She often stands out not only as the only disabled driver, but the paralysis she sustained meant that competing required a highly specialised vehicle, ensuring she is at no real disadvantage to her fellow competitors. Nathalie is frequently the only woman on the grid, proving tough competition for her able-bodied male competitors. Her journey from injury to the racetrack, an environment where a car took nearly everything from her, yet through which a car ultimately gave her back freedom, forms the basis of her motivational story, often described as an unlikely love story of defeat, triumph, and freedom.
Her list of achievements extends far beyond the racetrack. After only three short years in the sport, Nathalie was appointed President of the FIA Disability and Accessibility Commission, the commission responsible for setting the governing body’s global policies on disabled participation in motorsport. She currently holds the distinction of being the only FIA Commission President with a disability. In addition to her governance role, in 2016, Nathalie co-founded the charity Spinal Track. This organisation provides disabled drivers who use adaptations with the opportunity to experience high-performance driving, offering their first track time on circuits like the Silverstone GP or helping them learn advanced car control.
