Having forged a successful career as a competitive swimmer, Melanie claimed her first four medals at the 1995 European Youth Olympics in Bath – taking home four shining gold medals. By 2004, Melanie was ranked no.1 in the world, having broken the 200m freestyle British record. Such an impressive feat earned Melanie selection to compete at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Melanie’s next success saw her claim Bronze at the 2008 Short Course World Championships, as part of the 4x100m freestyle relay team. At the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Melanie delivered a showstopping performance, bringing home six medals – four Silver and two Bronze Commonwealth Games medals. After her retirement from swimming, having also claimed the ASA National British 100m Freestyle title three times, the 400m Freestyle title twice and the 50m Backstroke title once, Melanie decided to use her expertise for good – becoming a swimming coach and taking on the role of Head Coach of the City of Derby Swimming Club. Diving in head-first to coaching, Melanie met Adam Peaty, who would under her watch go on to become a European, Commonwealth, World and Olympic champion. Having coached Adam since he was just 12 years old, Melanie helped to shape the world-class swimmer into the champion he is today, efforts that saw her named the International Swim Coach of the Year 2014.
