With an extensive career spanning more than 15 years, various medals and achievements, Matt has been honoured with an MBE for his services to rowing, a testament to his influence on an international level. Having made history in his junior career and claimed a coveted Olympic Gold in his senior career, Matt has now transferred his skillset to a corporate environment, since retiring. Sought after for speaking engagements, Matt shares anecdotes from the boat in addition to establishing actionable goals and motivating his audiences to achieve them.
Best known for his Olympic success, the international Games are the goal of every qualifiable athlete. Competing at no less than four summer Olympics, Matt won medals at Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro, making him one of the most successful in the sport. After missing the podium at Athens in 2004, Matt was more driven than ever to improve his performance and moving into the Men’s Eight format allowed him to thrive in a team. Achieving his ultimate goal in 2016, Matt and team GB produced a near perfect race driven by mental and physical stamina, which saw them sail into first, and win the Olympic Gold medal for Men’s 8s. Equally prominent in World Championships, Matt first stepped up to the competition in 2007 where he won Bronze in the Coxless Pair race.
Since, he has gone from strength to strength securing a further two Gold medals in Men’s Four and in the World Cup winning medals in all five years entered, three being Gold. A standout rower from the start of his career, Matt’s early history making feat as the first British rower to win Gold in single sculls at the World Rowing Junior Championships, set the president for the rest of his influential career. Since retiring from professional sports, Matt has proven the benefit of his transferable skillset, first working as a coach and later retraining as a commercial pilot. Through commitment, hard work and resilience Matt has enjoyed an illustrious career and uses his experiences to inspire the same qualities in his audiences as a speaker. Whether discussing the components of team peak performance with a business or achieving individual aspirations with school students, Matt’s message is delivered with humour, honesty and passion.
