Louise Galvin is a former Ireland Sevens star who, following a rich career filled with standout moments and boundless opportunities, has redirected her focus toward helping others through physiotherapy. An inspiration to young girls and women across rugby, football, and basketball, she’s a wonderful women whose impact on the Gaelic sports scene simply can’t be ignored. Louise has many iconic games to her name, has won 30 Seven caps in only five years, and has even represented Ireland at the 2019 Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco.
Born and raised in Finuge in North Kerry, Louise had a very active childhood. Initially, she played both basketball and football – a venture that ended at 14, and restarted again when the Finuge GAA Club chose to start a women’s team. At 21, she made the Kerry senior team, and also became the captain of the Ireland Under-20s basketball team. Unfortunately, this would be cut short due to lack of funding, but not before Louise was able to secure herself one senior cap.
This would eventually kickstart Louise’s rugby World Series debut in Dubai. Immediately recognised as an exceptionally talented player, she went on to spend the next five years impressing fans, scoring sensational tries, and representing the best of Irish women’s rugby. Between 2015 and 2020, Louise won 30 Sevens caps for each tournament she played in, was featured in 96 World Series Games, and was able to score a staggering 22 tries. Things seemed to be going swimmingly. That is until, after moving onto Sydney following the World Series Event in Hamilton, the Irish team started to hear about a new virus outbreak preventing the Chinese team from competing.
Little did Louise know that this was the dawn of a devastating pandemic that spelled the end of her rugby career. Thankfully, it would also open new doors for her entirely. Now in her 30s, Louise came to accept that her time in the spotlight had come to an end. So, she hung up her boots and dedicated her time to becoming a skilled physiotherapist. During the pandemic, she’d had the opportunity to care for patients at Tullamore Hospital – particularly those emerging from Intensive Care – and she took great joy in making their lives better through physiotherapy. Now, Louise is a beloved physiotherapist whose dynamic journey is a delight to listen to.
