Sports scientist and former competitor in the pentathlon, Greg Whyte is a leading figure in the world of sports and physical activity. A former pentathlete and Olympian, Greg Whyte achieved great success as a professional sportsman. Claiming medals in both the European and World Championships of the sport, Greg reached peak performance as a competitor before becoming a motivator, trainer and therapist. As one of the UK’s foremost authorities on exercise physiology and rehabilitation, his work as a professional physiotherapist has brought him into contact with some of the most decorated sportsmen and women of recent years. Naturally, Greg progressed into lecturing, at Liverpool’s John Moore’s University as a Professor in Applied Sport and Exercise Science. He is also the Director of Performance at the Centre for Health and Human Performance in London, the Chair of the UK Active Research Insitute Scientific Advisory Board and a Principal Investigator for WADA.
Greg has also achieved an MSc in human performance from Frostburg State University in the US and completed his PhD at St. Georges Hospital Medical School and the University of Wolverhampton, where he also served as a research coordinator. He is a Fellow of both the British Association of Sport and Exercise and the American College of Sports Medicine and previously acted as the Chairman of the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) for more than ten years. He has also formerly worked as a Director of Science Research for the English Institute of Sport and Director of Research for the British Olympic Association.
With a wealth of experience both practically and educationally in sports science, Greg has become the expert for many of the Comic Relief challenges undertaken by celebrities, coaching and advising them. In total, he has been involved in the training and coaching of 33 Sport and Comic Relief Challenges, including training David Walliams to swim the channel, guiding nine celebrities to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro and assisting Eddie Izard in running forty-three marathons in fifty days. Greg has also worked with Jo Brand on her walk from Hull to Liverpool, titled 'Hell of a Walk', and assisted Greg James with 5 triathlons in 5 cities in 5 days. A true inspiration to all, Greg has helped to raise an incredible £50 million for Comic Relief and Sport Relief and also authored Achieve the Impossible and Bump It Up.
