Legendary British actor, John Challis, is best known for his iconic role in BBC’s Only Fools and Horses. A star of the stage and screen, Challis’ talents have extended over six decades, gaining him one of the broadest and most loyal fan bases of any performer, and solidifying his place in entertainment history. The comedy star is now sharing an insight into his illustrious media career, as an after dinner speaker, and has recently proven hugely popular on his UK speaking tour, making him the ideal celebrity to enhance your occasion.
Synonymous with the BBC comedy series ‘Only Fools and Horses’ Challis was cast as the comical and austentatious ‘Boycie’ in 1981. For over a decade, Challis thrilled audiences with his exceptional characterisation, and by the end of the long running series, Challis had made the most appearances by any actor. Starring in the spin off, The Green Green Grass, Challis responded to fan demand to see more of the much loved character, and actor, in the series which was produced between 2005 and 2009. However, Challis is not a one trick pony and has taken on all manner of parts, from Christmas pantomimes like Aladdin to serious television roles including Doctor Who.
Unsupported in his dreams of becoming an actor, as a young adult Challis instead was encouraged to follow a more certain path, training as an estate agent. After a brief period in a number of ‘sensible’ jobs, Challis joined a travelling children’s theatre, the beginning of his ambitions being realised. One of many great actors to have never attended formal drama school, Challis thrived in the entertainment environment, with a natural ability to take on characters and improvise humour, leading him to secure roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 60s and his TV debut in The Newcomers in 1965.
As one of the most recognisable faces in television, for a range of generations, Challis has since written two autobiographies, covering life before, during and after his role of Boycie. The first was published in 2011 ‘Being Boycie’. After such popularity on his book tour, and the demand to hear more from the iconic television actor, Challis has since embarked on a UK wide speaking tour ‘An Evening With John Challis’ where he answers questions, interacts with audiences and signs autographs. After six decades in entertainment, John Challis is still an evidently iconic and adored star, making him the ideal after dinner speaker for your occasion.
