Jackie first embarked into the world of racing when he was asked to test cars at Oulton Park. With an evident talent for racing, Jackie was given the opportunity to drive a Jaguar E-Type, in which he replicated the times of famous driver Roy Salvadori. With his talents catching the eye of top racing officials, Jackie was given the opportunity to race for Ecurie Ecosse where he honed his skills and claimed 14 racing victories. As his talents continued to develop, Jackie was scouted to join the Tyrell racing team, first competing in Formula Three for the team. He later competed in his first races in an F1 car as part of the BRM team, making his F1 debut at the 1965 South African Grand Prix.
Since making his debut in 1965, Jackie claimed numerous victories and was even named the 4th Best Driver of All Time by The Economist. He also claimed recognition as the 1973 Sportsman of the Year from Sports Illustrated, BBC Sports Personality of the Year and ABC’s Wide World of Sport Athlete of the Year. After retiring from racing, Jackie has gone on to become a commentator on NASCAR, Indianapolis 500 and F1 races and was also an announcer at the 1976 Summer and Winter Olympic Games in the Luge and Equestrian events. He also provided coverage for NBC SportsWorld on CART IndyCar races and acted as the Head Sports Consultant/ Patron for the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Throughout his time as a racer, Jackie was passionate to ensure that the safety of the sport was drastically improved, appalled by the lack of protective measures that were seen on the track. He has championed increased medical support and provisions as well as pushing for more safety barriers to be installed. Since the days of Jackie’s racing, the safety of Formula One has drastically improved, a testament to the perseverance of Jackie’s advocacy. Jackie is also passionate about Dementia, having founded the Race Against Dementia charity.
