Galal Yafai is a talented athlete, who competes in amateur boxing representing Great Britain. Having first competed for Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Galal returned to compete at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Having also claimed Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Galal is a talented boxer who is following in the footsteps of former talented male boxers. Born into a family of boxers, his brothers being Kal Yafai who held the WBA super-flyweight title from 2016-2020 and Gamal Yafai who held the European super-bantamweight title 2020-2021, Galal was destined for boxing success. Competing in a variety of national and international competitions, Galal claimed his first major win at the 2015 Liverpool English National Championships. Here, Galal claimed a Bronze English National Championship medal and solidified his promising reputation as a boxer. He then went on to compete in the 2017 European Championships, claiming a Silver European Championship medal.
Galal has also represented his country at the Olympics, winning qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games at the 2016 European Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. Representing Team GB at the 2016 Games, Galal was unfortunately defeated in the Round of 16 fight. Returning to the games at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, postponed due to Covid-19, Galal claimed Olympic Gold in the Flyweight Boxing. Galal has also claimed Bronze at the 2019 European Games and competed at the 2019 World Championships in Russia, but unfortunately lost in the quarter-finals. Galal was later honoured with an MBE in 2022.
