Chris Woakes is a hugely talented seam bowling all-rounder who won senior England honours aged 21. His first-class debut came for Warwickshire in 2006 against West Indies A, but he had to wait until the latter part of the 2007 season to get his second chance. Woakes soon became a star performer for the county and after a string of impressive performances, was rewarded for his consistently strong displays with a place in the England Performance Programme squad to tour Australia over the winter.
He then received his first senior call-up for the limited-overs series that followed the Ashes, hitting the winning runs on debut and taking 6-45 in his second one-day international. Having missed out on the 2011 World Cup, Woakes twice represented England that summer when his 56 wickets and 579 runs aided a strong Warwickshire challenge for the LV= County Championship Division One title. A quad injury prematurely ended his limited-overs tour of India and saw him miss out on the subsequent winter squads announced in late 2011.
Yet Woakes once again played a key role for his county in 2012, a year in which his batting came to the fore in the form of 588 first-class runs at an average of 74 helped them win the championship. Further England outings came in the home One Day International series against South Africa and Woakes was also part of the squad that toured India at the beginning of 2013. He won more limited-overs caps the next summer. Woakes was a non-playing member of the Test squad that toured New Zealand in early 2013, effectively in place of the injured Tim Bresnan.
When Bresnan was sidelined again in August that year Woakes made his five-day debut in the fifth Investec Ashes Test. However, he was not in the squad for that winter's Ashes. He was recalled to the five-day team for the third Investec Test against India at the Ageas Bowl and later that summer held his nerve while bowling the last over of the NatWest T20 Blast final as his county won the title on home soil. He was selected in the 2015 World Cup squad and helped England into the Tri-Series final against Australia that preceded it. He continues to be selected for England's One Day International squads and was selected for the One Day International series against Sri Lanka in summer 2016.
