Simon Hughes was a professional cricketer for 15 years winning 9 major titles with Middlesex - though never playing for England - before embarking on a career in the media. It began with newspaper journalism, progressed into writing books, one of which - A Lot Of Hard Yakka - won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award. He then moved into TV and became known as The Analyst for his ground-breaking work on Channel 4’s cricket coverage, winning two Baftas for his unique way of explaining the game. It changed the way sport was covered on TV. He is now The Analyst on Channel 5’s cricket coverage and on BBC’s Test Match Special. He also writes for The Times and as, editor of The Cricketer Magazine, has been nominated as sports magazine editor of the year.
His motivational talks cover Five Things I Wish I’d Known is a funny yet poignant human story relaying the mistakes he made as a cricketer and highlighting the philosophies he has acquired from playing and working with leading sportsmen that have given him a highly successful second career.
Hughes is currently heard on Channel 5's highlights and BBC Test Match Special, and also on The Times' digital output, and his columns can be read in The Times and The Cricketer Magazine. It is often forgotten that he was a fair cricketer in his own-right, taking over 750 wickets for Middlesex in all competitions, and winning four-county championship titles and five one-day trophies with the county, before playing in Durham's first two seasons as a first-class county.
As well as his broadcast and newspaper work, Hughes has written nine books on cricket, including the award-winning A Lot of Hard Yakka. His latest is Who Wants To Be A Batsman?. Also in possession of multiple experiences of after dinner speaking, Hughes can serve as both a speaker and host to your event, for a variety of both club and corporate audiences.
