Alex Danson is the former team Captain of the England and GB Hockey teams, having achieved 203 caps for the England Hockey team and 103 caps for the Great Britain Hockey team. Now retired from playing, Alex has launched the Alex Danson Hockey Academy with whom she works to increase awareness and participation in grassroots hockey. An Olympic Gold and Bronze medallist and a Gold Commonwealth Games medallist, Alex unfortunately suffered a head injury that left her unable to play and she retired in 2020. Now booked as a speaker for corporate and public events, Alex shares her story as a renowned hockey player.
Making her international debut aged just 16, Alex played against Germany and from that point on achieved immense success in her hockey career. Accumulating over 300 caps representing her country, Alex’s hockey career spanned an impressive 17 years and she scored 115 goals. Representing Team GB at the Olympics, Alex claimed Bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. She also claimed three Bronze Commonwealth Games medals, five European Nations Cup Bronze medals, a Silver and a Gold European Nations Cup medal. She has also claimed a Bronze World Cup medal and been appointed MBE for Services to Hockey.
Playing in the winning game at the Rio 2016 Olympics, Alex was watched by over nine million people. A fan favourite in hockey, Alex has also been shortlisted for the FIH World Player of the Year four times, been named 2011 Reading Sports Personality of the Year and 2011 UK Female Player of the Year. In 2018 whilst on holiday with her partner in Kenya, Alex hit her head on a brick wall which left her with mild brain trauma. Becoming sensitive to light, noise and movement, Alex has endured a long period of recovery and has since decided to retire from professional hockey. Today, she focuses her interests on her hockey academy, inspiring the next generation of potential Olympic winning hockey players.
Now also a coach at Wimbledon Hockey Club, Alex shares her spare time as a public speaker for a range of events. Sharing her story of injury and the impressive achievements she has made in her playing career, Alex is a perfect addition as a sports speaker to your next event. Having been the Captain of England and GB hockey teams and claimed an impressive tally of medals, Alex is an articulate and confident speaker and tailors her speeches to suit each audience she speaks to. A truly inspirational athlete who is a firm fan favourite and emerged from incredible adversity, Alex Danson is an unforgettable addition to events of all kinds.
