Sam Ward is famed for his talents as a hockey player, playing in the forward position for Old Georgians HC and representing Team GB as a centre forward in the men’s matches. Having achieved two gold and two bronze medals in his sporting career, Sam has played in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, in EuroHockey Championships and Commonwealth Games demonstrating his raw talent for the game. Having shown immense perseverance and overcome adversity already in his sporting career, Sam is now booked as a speaker for corporate and public events to share his sporting success.
Beginning his playing career in 2009, Sam first played for the Leicester hockey club. Since then he has also played for teams such as Loughborough Students, Beeston, Holcombe and his current team is the Old Georgians HC. Showing great talent, Sam was also selected to represent England, and has played in the 2014 Men’s Hockey Championships Trophy and was on the England squad for the EuroHockey Championship 2021. He was also selected to represent Team GB at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where the team placed 9th.
His ever-expanding medal tally includes Gold at the 2015 Hockey World League Semi-Final, Bronze at the 2017 EuroHockey Championships, Gold at the 2017 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and Bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In 2019, Sam was selected to represent Team GB once again and played in the Olympic Qualifier against Malaysia. Unfortunately, disaster struck and Sam was hit in the face with the ball, suffering horrific injuries to his face. As a result of being hit in the face, Sam partially lost sight in his left eye and has to wear a face shield when playing. Returning to represent Team GB at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Sam and his team finished in 5th place.
A talented player who has persevered in the face of adversity, claiming 64 home caps and 77 Team GB caps, Sam is now a popular sport after dinner speaker for a range of corporate and public events. Sharing with audiences his story of injury, Sam inspires all to keep going when the going gets tough. Also inspiring audiences with tales of his success and the medals he has clinched, Sam motivates others to give hocket a try.
