After speculation about his future, Kevin Pietersen has been bought by the Delhi Daredevils for £880,000 (90m rupees) in the Indian Premier League auction in Bangalore. Despite expectation that he would break the record for the most expensive player ever, Pietersen’s was only the third highest price on the day.
India's Yuvraj Singh was bought for the larger sum of £1.37m (140m rupees) by Royal Challengers Bangalore. This year, players are being bought in Indian rupees instead of US dollars for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Pietersen was the only current or former England international to sell on the first day of auctions, while a host of other top international players were bought. Pietersen will be able to play throughout the entire tournament after being released from his contract by England. This will be the seventh edition of the annual 20-over tournament which grows in popularity year on year.
Pietersen, who signed a new contract to play county cricket for Surrey, has played 21 IPL matches for either the Bangalore Royal Chargers or Delhi Daredevils, but missed last season's competition due to injury.
