After what seems like an eternity, Britain will be hosting its second major sporting event in three years with the start of the Rugby World Cup on Friday.
England, the only northern hemisphere team to ever lift the Webb Ellis Cup, will kick off the tournament against Fiji and usher in six weeks of pure rugby heaven, during which the world’s best teams will charge, scrum, dodge, tackle, fight, cross over and convert until, on October 31, only two sides remain to contest the final at Twickenham.
Unlike in football, where nobody under the age of 55 is likely to remember the last time an England side won a major tournament, the rugby side have reached three RWC finals since 1987, and clinched the sport’s top prize just 12 years ago with a stunning 20-17 over hosts Australia.
One of the key men throughout the tournament for England was Lawrence Dallaglio OBE. Standing at 6’4”, the Number Eight was the only component of Sir Clive Woodward’s side to play every single minute of the tournament. He also captained the team on two separate occasions.
Lawrence is also revered in club rugby, being a rare one-club player courtesy of his 18-year spell at Wasps RFC, during which he helped the London-based outfit claim five Aviva Premiership titles, two Heineken Cups and three Anglo-Welsh Cups.
As an after dinner speaker, Lawrence speaks of the importance of inspiring young people to become more active and take part in competitive sport. He also shares anecdotes from his time as one of the greatest rugby players that both Wasps and England have ever counted among their ranks.
