Golf speaker and former international golf amateur Julie Otto is best known for her part in the British & Irish Curtis Cup teams of the 1980s & ’90s. Retiring before achieving professional status Julie went on to work in golfing administration and continues to maintain a successful career as a sports speaker.
Best remembered for her role as an international amateur and participator in fourteen national titles, Julie completed for Great Britain and Ireland, against the United States, in a total of five Curtis Cups. After achieving a victory in the competition in 1996, Julie retired, having never reached professional status.
Despite retiring Julie Otto remained involved in the golfing industry, taking on a role as a coach, administrator, and golf speaker. Her most significant contributions to the sport as an administrator is arguably her work at golf’s world governing body, the R&A, where she was made Assistant Director of Rules. In addition to her administration work, she also referred a number of men’s professional games, including nine Open Championships, a Solheim Cup and the Walker Cup.
Currently based at the Elle Sports Club in Fife, Julie Otto offers a number of valuable golf services. Coaching and training aspiring golfers, Julie provides both group and one to lessons in the sport for amateurs and professionals. Furthermore, she has developed a program for people with autism to enjoy and experience golf, as well as an overseas golf academy. Determined her teaching would be up to standard, Julie completed the PGA qualification and was subsequently named as the Titleist PGA Assistant of the Year in 2015.
In 2011, at the age of 44, Julie Otto came out of retirement to once again participate as a player and to further develop her work in golf tuition. The former British Champion joined the Ladies European Tour in 2013. Proving there are no limits to her versatility, in 2018 she released a book titled ‘Instructions not Supplied’ about her experience of autism, and adoption.
