During 1972 Graeme had the chance to play for Montreal Olympique, competing in the North American Soccer League. Appearing in ten of the teams games Graeme made his mark, claiming a spot in the League’s All-Star team of the season. Upon returning to the UK Graeme joined Middlesbrough football club, and made his debut for the team in a match against Fulham in 1973.
The most significant part of his career as a footballer is his time spent with Liverpool. Whilst with Liverpool Graeme helped the team to secure five League Championships, Four League Cups and three European Cups. His debut for the team came in 1978 in the 1-0 league victory against West Bromwich Albion. Graeme spent time as the captain at Liverpool, and is still one of only four captains to lift the European Cup. In 1984 Graeme left Liverpool, joining Sampdoria before joining the Rangers in 1986. Whilst with the Rangers Graeme was given the chance to be the player-manager of the team.
As well as club football Graeme also represented England, being capped 54 times by the England national team. He had the chance to play in three of England’s World Cup ventures, scoring four goals whilst playing. He later returned to his former team Liverpool, this time as the team manager. During his first season as manager, the team took home victories in the Championships and League Cups. After his first managing stint, he went on to manage a number of other high profile teams. Such teams included Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and Torino.
