Emile Heskey is a retired English international football star who has enjoyed a professional career that lasted 22 years, Heskey has all the experience to be a magnificent football speaker. Throughout his career, he played 633 games domestically scoring 130 goals as well as being capped 62 times for England scoring seven times. A 6-foot 2-inch striker, he was a nightmare for defenders and built a great career using his strength and footballing capabilities.
Heskey’s first professional club was Leicester City, where he made his debut at just 17 in a match against Queens Park Rangers. Heskey became a regular in the first team the season after, playing 30 times in the league for Leicester. His first goal came in a 1-0 win against Norwich City and he went on to score seven goals that season. He helped guide Leicester back to the Premier League where he scored 10 goals in 35 appearances in their first season back in the top flight. Heskey scored the equaliser in the League Cup final which Leicester eventually went on to win, placing him as runner-up to David Beckham in the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.
After a few successful seasons, Heskey moved to Liverpool for a club-record fee of £11 million. Heskey scored 39 goals in 150 appearances for Liverpool in a spell that lasted from 2000 to 2004. He scored 22 goals in the season where he helped the club win a treble, this included winning the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup. He moved to Birmingham City in 2004 on a five-year contract.
Heskey was named the club’s Player of the Year in the 2004-05 season and finished as Birmingham’s top goalscorer with 11 goals. He was later signed by Wigan Athletic for a £5.5 million fee, a move that would see Heskey back in the Premier League. He helped Wigan avoid relegation on goal difference as he scored eight goals during the season. Heskey eventually went on to play for Aston Villa, Newcastle Jets and Bolton Wanderers before announcing his retirement at the end of the 2015-16 season.
He played a part in two FIFA World Cups for England and many qualification campaigns, as well as a European Championship tournament. Eventually, Heskey retired from international football in 2010. Since retiring, Heskey has become one of the most sought after football speakers, he often discusses his remarkable career, delving into vital topics such as maximising success, the importance of teamwork and peak performance. Heskey’s years spent in the game set the backdrop for the ideal after dinner speech.
