Tori Murden is a fearless adventurer who became the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic. Now the President of Spalding University, Tori has led the charge on initiatives that have earned the University recognition as the World’s First Compassionate University. An experience speaker, Tori has incredible stories of adventure, resilience and perseverance to share. She is the perfect choice for your next corporate event.
In 1988, Tori set off on her first trailblazing adventure and became the first woman, and the first American, to reach the summit of Lewis Nunatak in the Antarctic. The following year, she embarked on her next adventure and became, once again, the first woman and the first American to ski to the geographic South pole, a relentless 700-mile expedition. In 1998, Tori set her sights on her next record breaking endeavour and began her first attempt to row solo across the Atlantic. Tragically, the arrival of hurricane season meant Tori was forced to abandon her trip. Undeterred and as driven as ever, in 1999, Tori set off from the Canary Islands on her second attempt, and after eighty-one gruelling days, and 3,333 miles, she arrived at Guadeloupe, making her the first woman to row across the Atlantic. In 2009, Tori published her memoir, “A Pearl in the Storm: How I Found My Heart in the Middle of the Ocean” documenting her extraordinary achievements.
Tori’s impressive accomplishments are not just limited to the world of adventure. She is also wildly respected as a chaplain, lawyer and university administrator. Over the course of her career, Tori has worked as a chaplain at Boston City Hospital, an executive director for a Louisville women’s shelter and worked closely with the boxer and humanitarian Muhammad Ali. Tori is currently the president of Spalding University, and trustee for both the Muhammad Ali Centre, and the National Outdoor Leadership School, which focuses on environmental ethics and adventuring.
Recipient of the Peter Bird Trophy for Tenacity and Pesercerance, and the Kentucky Derby Festival’s Silver Horse Shoe Award for Courage, Determination, and Community Service, Tori is now a sought-after speaker with a wealth of insights to share.
