Timandra Harkness

Timandra Harkness has commanded the world of science & technology with her ability to fuse insight and humour as a broadcaster, writer and radio presenter. Speaking with authority on big data, AI & robots, science and technology, Timandra is the author of “Big Data: Does Size Matter?”. Her book questions how well people understand the concept of big data, and sheds light on the complicated subject. A woman of many talents, Timandra’s career has been rife with achievement after achievement as a writer, radio presenter and comedian. She has dabbled in performing the flying trapeze in the circus, improv, and stand-up comedy before she performed her highly acclaimed show ‘Take a Risk’ at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She has also written and performed ‘Your Days Are Numbered: The Maths of Death’, ‘Brainsex’, and ‘Science Burlesque’ – each of which has been lauded for its though-provoking and naturally, hilarious nature.

Timandra acquired her degrees after establishing her career as a Broadcaster for the BBC. She possesses a BSc in Mathematics & Statistics from The Open University and an MA in Philosophy from the University of London. Outside her academic success, Timandra has hosted 'FutureProofing’, ‘Steelmanning’ and ‘Five Knots’ on BBC Radio 4. As a talented writer, she has written and directed radio, short film and live performance scripts, of which her comedy play ‘No Future in Eternity’ was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Timandra’s writing on risk, futurism and technology has also been published in Telegraph, Sunday Times, The Guardian and Evening Standard to name a few. In 2013, she served as the Resident Reporter for BBC Radio 4's The Human Zoo series. 

Serving as the Chair of the Significance Magazine Editorial Board, Timandra exemplifies her prowess as a science & technology expert. She is also a Member of the RSS Council, RSS Data Ethics and Governance sections. Timandra has been invited to share her views on AI & technology at prestigious stages such as the CogX festival and The Alan Turing Institute, in addition to delivering her TEDx talk "What is Knowledge in the Age of Big Data?".
