Sue Garrard

Sue Garrard is a leading sustainability expert, who has been part of developing critical sustainability strategies for high-profile companies – including Mars, Primark and the BBC. Having gained over 11 years of experience at Unilever, Sue has gained a deep understanding of relevant strategies for improving sustainability. Having begun her corporate career as the Board Director of Fishburn Hedges, Sue transitioned into public sector work as the Director of Communications at the Department for Work and Pensions. In 2010 she was promoted to Director General of Marketing Comms and Customer Strategy in the Department for Work and Pensions, a role in which she was responsible for managing all the external corporate relations of the department. After a brief period working as the Non-Executive Director of the Serious and Organised Crime Agency, Sue joined Unilever in 2011 – becoming the SVP of Global Communications for Unilever. Realising her passion for sustainability, Sue was then appointed as the EVP of Sustainable Business Development and Communications for Unilever in 2014 – a role she continues today.

In addition to her highly successful corporate career, Sue is also a dedicated supporter of countless charities and start-up organisations devoted to sustainability. Determined to champion change, Sue donated 20% of her income to charitable causes in 2021. Respected for the detailed knowledge she has nurtured throughout her career, Sue is now the Chair of Blueprint for Better Businesses, is a Fellow at both the University of Cambridge and Cranfield, and sits on the Sustainability Advisory Board of Fonterra and Zespri – all roles that have allowed Sue to educate a wider audience on the critical importance of sustainability and environmental action throughout society.
