
Chris Hines is a leading pioneer of sustainability, famed as the Sustainability Director of The Eden Project. Strongly focussing on a solution to problems in the world, Chris founded Surfers Against Sewage back in 1990. For ten years, Chris worked as the Director of Surfers Against Sewage, campaigning for clean seas and ocean conservation. In 2001, Chris joined the team developing the multiple greenhouse complex now known as The Eden Project. The Eden Project was built in a reclaimed china clay pit, consisting of domes housing thousands of different plants and emulating a natural biome. As Director of Sustainability, Chris ensured that the project adhered to sustainable practices and had environmental sustainability at its heart.
After working as the Director of Sustainability for six years, Chris later went on to create A Grain of Sand, a company dedicated to delivering positive environmental change. Focussing on positive solutions to change and creating the agenda for environmental change, Chris has also been a Special Advisor to the Rt. Hon Michael Meacher MP Minister for the Environment and appeared on programmes such as BBC Newsnight and Panorama. He is also widely known for commissioning the Blue Gym project, which earned him a Royal Television Society Award, and for joint-winning the first International Surfers Path Green Wave Award. Appointed MBE for Services to the Environment in 2008, Chris was also recognised as one of the Daily Telegraph’s Eco Heroes.
Having helped to deliver £5 billion spend on UK coastlines, campaigned for clean oceans and sewage treatment works, Chris is now booked as a sustainability and environment speaker for a range of corporate events.
