One of the best-loved British television actors, Stephen Tompkinson has been keeping audiences entertained on the small screen for over two decades. Most recognisable for his roles in ITV dramas DCI Banks and Wild at Heart, Stephen is multi-talented and has acted on stage, presented television documentaries and has tried his hand at directing.
Attending the Central school of Speech and Drama in London in the 80s alongside fellow esteemed actors James Nesbitt and Rufus Sewell, Stephen didn’t have to wait long for his first role landing a part in the BAFTA nominated short film Treacle (1988). The role that catapulted him into the public eye was the drama Ballykissangel (1996) where he played a priest for three series.
Stephen has appeared in a diverse range of television programmes throughout his career. From comedies and serious dramas to family-friendly roles, Stephen has done it all. One of Stephen’s most famous roles was in Wild at Heart (2006-2012) where he played vet Danny Trevanion who encountered problems trying to start a life for his family in South Africa. He received fantastic praise for his role of Danny, winning seven awards including Best Actor and Best Drama.
The accolades don’t end there though he has also received awards for his comedy performances, winning best comedy actor for his role in Drop the Dead Donkey (1994). In recent times Stephen is known for his role in the ITV award winning drama DCI Banks (2010) where he played police officer Alan Banks who solves shocking crimes.
Away from acting, Stephen’s love of travelling has led him to make numerous documentaries. Stephen Tompkinson's Great African Balloon Adventure (2009), saw him explore Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia, which also led to him producing an Australia version of the balloon adventure. Having been part of some of the most popular television dramas in recent years, Stephen has some fantastic stories which engages audiences at all his after-dinner speaking events.
