Seyi Rhodes is an investigative journalist, presenter and filmmaker who rose to fame for his award-winning films on Channel 4’s popular series, Unreported World. From 2008-2019 Seyi reported at least one episode per year of the foreign affairs programme which took him all over the world, exposing him to the impact the West has on developing countries. It was the impact of the West on environmental issues in particular which Seyi wanted to explore. In the Virgin Podcast ‘Earth Unscrewed’ Seyi speaks of this impact, and other climate change issues, and some of the surprising developments which provide hope for the future. With experience from many different cultures, Seyi is able to speak on topics such as politics, climate and sustainability, education, media, ethnicity, leadership and gender roles.
Upon graduating from the University of West England in Politics, Sociology and Economics, Seyi spent numerous years as a Researcher and Assistant Producer for the BBC. He was responsible for investigating subjects such as teenage gangs and con artists for documentaries. This work often involved him doing month-long investigations and secret filming. He also spent three years with on Channel 5’s ‘The Wright Stuff’ as Matthew Wright’s sidekick where he interviewed some of the biggest names in showbusiness including Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp. As part of this role, Seyi also interviewed audience members which sparked his passion for discovering untold stories.
This passion led Seyi to Quicksilver Media, where he worked on numerous episodes of Channel 4’s Unreported World. Born in the UK and raised between Spain, Nigeria and Tobago, culture has always fascinated Seyi and his work for Channel 4 allowed him to explore unique stories of many individuals from all over the world. His travels were aided by his ability to speak English, French and Spanish, and a little bit of Portuguese and Creole. The films he has made continue to have a huge impact all around the world. 8 years after its production, Seyi’s film ‘Nigeria’s Millionaire Preachers’ still gets thousands of views every year, other films he has created have led to the sacking of a government advisor in Trinidad, uncovered evidence of war crimes with his footage being use in a trial in the Ivory Coast, and his Haiti footage of ‘The World’s Worst Prison’ rallied a call from criminal justice reformers.
In 2009 Unreported World’s episode ‘Sierra Leone: The Insanity of War’, for which, Seyi was the presenter, won a MIND Mental Health Media Award. In the UK, Seyi has reported numerous episodes of Channel 4’s ‘Dispatches’ and ‘Tricks of the Restaurant Trade’.
