Scott Bateman is an airline pilot and former Royal Air Force captain with over three decades of experience operating in some of the world’s most demanding environments. Throughout his career, he has developed exceptional resilience, leadership and highly refined decision-making skills, and uses his extensive operational experience across military aviation, emergency response and long-haul commercial flying to share insights on innovation, communication, leadership and decision-making. With practical strategies and clear communication, Scott empowers a diverse range of audiences, strengthens leadership and streamlines decision-making processes.
Scott began his aviation career in the RAF, first as a C-130 Hercules air loadmaster before being selected for pilot training, going on to serve as a Hercules captain with the infamous 47 Squadron during a highly decorated 18-year military career. Following his time in the RAF, he transitioned to commercial aviation and has served as a Long-haul Commercial Pilot since 2008. Scott also built a second career in media, founding his production company, 9-Line Media in 2013. As the Creative Director of 9-Line Media, Scott creates non-fiction books, documentaries, podcasts and a variety of other media products for both specialist and general audiences. Scott has also shared his remarkable experiences as a published author. In 2024, he released the Sunday Times bestselling aviation memoir 'Hercules: First In, Last Out', a gripping account that takes readers inside the cockpit of one of the world’s most iconic military aircraft. He has since followed this with 'Jumbo: The Aircraft That Changed the World', which explores how the Boeing 747 transformed global travel and culture.
Alongside these roles, Scott served as Chair of the Board for the PilotsTogether charity. He also founded and chaired the Board of Trustees for the NHS charity First Response, and was awarded an MBE in 2000 in recognition of his services to the NHS. While Scott’s career has been varied it has consistently centred on leadership, teamwork and decision-making under pressure; skills forged in high-stakes operational environments where the consequences of judgement can be immediate and profound. With such depth of experience, Scott delivers practical, high-impact insights that resonate with audiences and drive meaningful change.
Drawing on experiences from combat zones, international flight decks, working with emergency services, and the study of human performance, Scott's keynote talks explore decision-making, leadership and the psychology of high-performing teams, revealing how individuals and organisations can make better choices when the pressure is highest and the stakes are real. Through powerful storytelling from the cockpit and beyond, Scott offers audiences rare insight into how professionals operate in complex, uncertain environments and how those lessons apply to business, leadership and life. Jumbo: The Aircraft That Changed the World
Scott Bateman's official speaking topics are listed below:
Jumbo: The Innovation That Changed the World
What the Boeing 747 can teach us about ambition, innovation and global transformation. From engineering gamble to global icon, the story of the Boeing 747, the Jumbo Jet, is one of bold leadership and extraordinary vision. Using insights from his book Jumbo, and his time flying the aircraft, Scott explores how innovation, risk-taking and leadership created an aircraft that reshaped global travel.
High-Performance Teams: Lessons from Combat Zones to Commercial Skies
How elite teams communicate, trust and perform in demanding environments. Modern aviation is one of the most safety-critical industries in the world. Scott reveals how flight crews in the military and commercial spheres manage risk within complex systems, make collective decisions and maintain situational awareness while operating across cultures and continents.
Key insights include:
- Psychological safety and speaking up
- Communication under pressure
- Shared mental models
- Leadership in the moment
The Decision Window™
How great decisions are made when time, information and certainty are limited. In aviation and military operations, decisions often need to be made in seconds with imperfect information. Drawing on real experiences from the cockpit, Scott explores how professionals manage risk, recognise critical moments and make confident decisions under pressure.
Audiences learn:
- How to recognise the “decision window”
- Why experience and instinct both matter
- How teams avoid decision paralysis
- Practical frameworks for better judgement under pressure
Into the Green: Night Vision, Narrow Margins and the Raid on Entebbe
What flying on the edge of visibility can teach us about judgement, preparation and courage. Flying a military aircraft at night using night-vision goggles places crews in one of aviation’s most demanding environments. Depth perception changes, horizons disappear and the margin for error narrows dramatically. In this talk, Scott Bateman MBE recounts a powerful personal experience from his RAF career, a night-vision training flight in the Hercules that came dangerously close to disaster, and the lessons it revealed about situational awareness, teamwork and decision-making when the margin for error disappears.
From that moment in the cockpit, Scott widens the story to one of the most audacious aviation operations ever attempted: the Israeli Air Force’s long-range Hercules mission during the 1976 Raid on Entebbe, where crews flew deep into hostile territory at night to rescue hostages from Uganda.
Through these two extraordinary stories, one personal, one historic, from his best-selling book Hercules, the talk explores what happens when preparation, technology and human judgement intersect in moments where everything is at stake.
Blending gripping storytelling with insights from aviation and leadership, Scott reveals how teams operate in environments where the difference between success and catastrophe can be measured in seconds.
